Guide Dogs of Texas
Guide Dogs of Texas is a 501 ( C ) 3 non-profit organization and the only accredited guide dog school in the entire state. Our mission is to provide quality guide dogs for Texans who are visually impaired to increase their freedom, mobility, and independence. We are committed to personalized service and lifelong dedication to our clients and their guide dogs.
Individuals who are visually impaired can suffer loneliness, depression, and isolation. We change their lives when they come to live at the school for up to 3 weeks while being meticulously matched with a guide dog who is specifically trained to meet the client’s unique and individual needs. Guide Dogs of Texas provides one-to-one client training in a home-like environment and volunteers share their hospitality by providing lunches and dinners to welcome and encourage new matches.
Guide Dogs of Texas provides comprehensive after-care services. Once the client leaves our school, our trainers follow them back home and address any concerns in the client’s own home environment. While it costs $38,000 to raise and train a guide dog, Guide Dogs of Texas does not receive any funding from government or insurance agencies. Guide Dogs of Texas relies solely on private contributions. The cost of the guide dog to a client is $1.
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Guide Dogs of Texas. They contribute their time and talents as puppy raisers, puppy development assistants, puppy boarders, and can even re-home retired guide dogs. Volunteers also serve as client meal volunteers, help with special events, drive our clients to and from speaking engagements, and are outstanding ambassadors for the agency at community events.
